What are the expected hygiene requirements?

Blackout prides itself on being a clean, fun, and safe gym for our students to train in. Hygiene is a top priority as we spend a great amount of time keeping the gym and mats in excellent shape. Basic hygiene can include: keeping fingernails and toenails trimmed short or to an appropriate length, being freshly showered if you work out in the elements or have a manual labor career, washing your Gi and grappling apparel as soon as you are home from training. Long hair should be tied or styled up in your preference, etc.

Can I be injured in Jiu Jitsu?

Jiu Jitsu is a physically demanding sport where you you are attempting to control another person with pressure, leverage, and joint manipulation. It is possible to become injured while training. However, at Blackout we utilize a red and yellow tape system to provide the safest training environment possible for our students and coaches. Red tape symbolizes you are okay with a potentially more aggressive roll. Yellow tape symbolizes you are okay with only rolling light, you may have an injury, or are just not ready to commit to rolling at a full pace. Whatever the case, we inforce this system to keep everyone safe, and as injury-free as possible.

Jiu Jitsu is a fantastic practice for women to take part in. Whether you want to try something new, get in shape, or you're interested in the self defense aspect of grappling, Jiu Jitsu is a great tool for all of the above.
